I care about my community

February 7th, 2007

We got a letter in the mail a few days ago inviting us to the new and improved community council meeting (new and improved referring to the council, not the meeting). I’ve never been to one before, but I was interested. Part of my interest was due to the new council chair, Delbert Rushton. He is a very interesting guy in our ward. Right now he’s serving in a nearby ward so we haven’t seen him too much, but he was the first person we met when we walked into our ward house after we moved in. He is very nice and outgoing, and always offers us free Lays, Pepsi, and Hostess products (long story).

Liz and Camillia and I went to the meeting tonight, which was held in the cafeteria at the Horizonte High School near our house. Attendance was low. My friend Fae from our ward was there, which I fully expected. She is very involved in community stuff. There were a few others from within our ward boundaries that looked vaguely familiar as well. The meeting started with a young lady from the city development people (something like that).  Then a rep from the Mayor’s office discussed street lights and sidewalk repair issues, and then some guys from a new government group addressing individual emergency preparedness talked to us. Finally, a local mayoral candidate stood up and told us why we should vote for him. The police representative didn’t show up, so Camillia and I didn’t get to address our drug-deal concerns. Maybe next month.

While I attended the meeting, Bryan took the boys to IHOP for dinner. While they were eating, someone backed into our Mazda in the parking lot and busted one of our taillights. Luckily for us, there was a witness who was able to get their license plate information and give it to Bryan. Bryan filed a report, and the cops called up the perp (I think I watch too much Law and Order). The lady came down and admitted what happened - kind of. She said she thought she might have hit us, but wasn’t sure, so she just left. Anyway, this is the second hit-and-run to happen to our Mazda in our neighborhood.
