I will miss Fae

June 23rd, 2007

One of my best friends in our ward, Fae Nichols, died on Monday (June 18). Today was her funeral, and our church was packed. Everyone brought tons of food and was on hand to help.

I have been in three wards since Bryan and I got married in August 2002. Every apartment/duplex/house we’ve lived in has been near 100 years old, so there have been a fair number of elderly people in each ward. It may sound rude to say, but I have never had an elderly person (in our ward) act like they cared a lick about me… until I met Fae. She did not even seem to notice that she was 50+ years older than me. She noticed when I wasn’t at church. She loved my kids. She brought us gifts. She kept me updated on neighborhood news. It is largely because of her that I do community council, Road Home stuff, mobile neighborhood watch, etc. She was a great example to me in my life. Judging by the number of people at her funeral, I was not alone. I am glad her death was quick and painless.

On a side note, her son said the following in his eulogy, which made me laugh. Fae would have laughed too.

“Us boys, and Dad, decided to remove her life support. But just as we were about to do it, my brother said, ‘Wait! Before we do this, does anybody know how to make tapioca pudding?!’”

- Don't go to work Dad. I like you. I don't want to miss you!

- Does this chicken have fish in it?

- (in a robot voice) I am a robot. Do as I say!

- Mom, will you please get out of bed and get me some breakfast?

- I don't want calzones! I want something tasty!

- Oh, donut! (darnit)

James says funny stuff

- Don't cook Mom! Come watch the movie!

- I had a nice nap.

- (After I asked him to open a door and go inside) I can't do it. I'm too small.

- I want some Cheerios, please. In this bowl (pointing to bowl). And milk. In this bowl, on the Cheerios. Oh, and I need a spoon.

- I don't like it! (Takes a little taste) I like it!

- (rolling a marble across the floor) Look Mom, I'm bowling!
