Father’s Day

Bryan is an excellent daddy. The boys love him so much, sometimes they just follow him around the house wherever he goes. They can’t get enough of him when he’s here (I’m always here so I’m no big deal). They were very excited to get him some presents for Father’s Day. First, we took the pictures below & put them in a three-photo frame with nice mats. We also got him the camera he’s been ogling (it’s the panoramic one that Taylor Swift is hawking on TV). At least I think he’s ogling the camera. Maybe he’s ogling Taylor. ;)

Bryan taught me how to make an omelette today, while I made him one for breakfast. It was pretty good! Ham, beef smoked sausage, green onions (homegrown), olives, cheddar, & feta. Mmmm…

Cookies

I learned this neat trick a long time ago from Mark & Jen. I know that you can store baked cookies in the freezer, but I like fresh-baked better. So when I make a batch of dough, I scoop it out & freeze the unbaked cookies on a cookie sheet (with parchment). When they’re solid, take them off the cookie sheet & toss them in a freezer bag. When we want cookies, we put the frozen dough balls on a cookie sheet (with parchment) & let them sit for 15 minutes or so while the oven heats up. Then bake!

Genius!

I love Brie. Love. it. Last week, while Jamie & I were shopping for food & snacks for our Zion trip, I spotted Brie in log form. Perfect for our trip! I highly recommend it.

Roasted salsa

I decided to try some roasted salsa with the last tomatoes from our garden. I found this recipe on my favorite recipe site. I made a few modifications – I added a poblano pepper, red & green bell pepper (homegrown), & tomatillos. I also roasted the veggies for a while, rather than broiling them for just a few minutes like the recipe indicated.

I forgot to take a picture of the finished salsa, but I just processed it until it was kind of smooth. It was tasty, but didn’t seem quite right. I think next time I’ll leave out the bell peppers or at least use a much smaller amount.

Kebabs

We have some garden produce that needs to be used up, so Bry decided to grill some kebabs. He marinated some boneless pork ribs in his signature marinade (some magic combination of soy sauce, Worchestershire, garlic, & onion), then put the pieces on skewers with cherry tomatoes, pearl onions, green peppers, & kielbasa. They were outrageous.

Roasted cherry maters

I had a bunch of yellow & red cherry tomatoes laying around, so I roasted some today. So simple, so tasty. I like to eat them with pasta, or on a toasted baguette, or just straight up.

Here is a good recipe. I don’t roast mine quite that hot – I don’t think my pan can handle 500 degrees.

Before:

After (yes, I had eaten alot of them):

Smoked

My husband is a smoker. He smokes an excellent ham. Seriously, this was the best ham I have ever tasted. Good job Bryon.

Valentimes Day

Below are some pictures of Rees getting his Valentimes ready for preschool. They held their party on Feb 12, since they don’t have school on Fridays. Also, a picture of the cookies we made & took to Bryan & his coworkers on Friday.

Bryan & I don’t do much for this “holiday”. I don’t really like the commercialization of it, you know? Like stores & businesses who try to make you feel like you’re a bad person if you don’t spend a lot of money on a gift or expensive date. I gave Bryan the usual – a pair of cotton jammie pants with a silly love-themed print (a tradition started when we were dating). He gave me lots of flowers & a big bag of Mike & Ike. Perfect.

Bonus points of you can spot the cranky toddler in the background (on the naughty mat).

Quintuple conjunctivitis

We have been battling bacterial pink-eye for several weeks at our house (plus cold, cough, fever, etc). We get rid of it just to have it appear again in another eye, on another boy. Bryan & I have not gotten it, but we can’t seem to eliminate it from the house. Here’s the progression:

Rees – right eye
Rees – left eye
James – left eye
Rees – right eye
James – right eye

Administering eye drops to toddlers reminds me a little of WWE. We now have a large stash of candy, unusual for us, but we are using it as a bribe. Here is the selection for agreeable boys:

What is Pocky, you ask? You can probably get it at your grocery store. Read about it here. The kids are crazy about it. Okay, I like it alot too.

I will be doing another round of Lysol today. Pray for me.

I also published two old posts about Rees today:
